A major new Canadian digital health initiative is bringing together researchers, healthcare organizations, and technology leaders to explore what’s next for AI-driven healthcare, and RxPx will be part of the work.

The Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) selected 14 projects for its $25 million Digital Health Innovation Fund (DHIF). Led by TFRI’s Digital Health & Discovery Platform (DHDP), the initiative includes 55 partners and $40.9 million in combined project value, with projects focused on advancing AI-driven discovery and precision medicine.

Where RxPx Comes In

RxPx is a partner in FLARE: Federated Learning for Adherence, Risk, and Engagement in Clinical Trials.

Together with OPTT Health, Providence Health Ventures, and Byte Quest Solutions, we’ll explore how AI and federated learning can help turn patient signals into earlier, more meaningful support across clinical trials and post-market programs.

The project will focus on three areas:

  1. Adherence and engagement: Identifying patients at risk to enable earlier support.
  2. Safety monitoring: Helping identify and triage potential adverse events with human oversight.
  3. Privacy-first patient engagement: Providing intelligent, personalized support within established governance and compliance requirements.

Central to FLARE is federated learning, which allows AI models to learn across organizations while sensitive patient data remains securely within each organization.

Building on What RxPx Does Best

For RxPx, FLARE is an opportunity to take work already underway and push it further.

Our teams are already working across patient engagement, clinical workflows, safety monitoring, and responsible AI to support patients throughout complex treatment journeys.

FLARE gives us an opportunity to explore what comes next: recognizing adherence and engagement risks sooner, surfacing meaningful safety signals earlier, and translating those insights into timely patient support.

“What excites me most about FLARE is the opportunity to advance AI in a way that prioritizes privacy, data sovereignty, and collaboration,” said Alireza Davoodi, VP of R&D at RxPx. “At a time when pharma, life sciences, and healthcare organizations are increasingly focused on how their data is accessed and used by technology partners, federated learning offers a different approach: bringing the AI model to the data rather than requiring sensitive data to be centralized.”

“For RxPx customers, this could enable more advanced, data-driven AI while giving organizations greater control over their information and supporting privacy, governance, and data-residency requirements. It also gives us an opportunity to develop more representative AI by learning across diverse healthcare environments and patient populations.”

We’re proud to bring RxPx’s experience to this collaboration and work alongside our FLARE partners and the broader Digital Health & Discovery Platform community to advance what responsible AI can make possible for patients and care teams.
